Welcome Message from President
Jose E. Coll

WNMU President, Jose Coll, Ph.D. As I begin my tenure as president of Western New Mexico University, I find myself incredibly optimistic about the future we will be building together.

Higher education is at a crossroads, and universities like WNMU are uniquely positioned to lead the way. To do so, we must anchor ourselves in a steadfast commitment to our core values, ensuring that every decision we make serves our ultimate goal: student success.

WNMU occupies a unique and essential position in higher education by providing access to students pursuing the traditional college experience while also serving those who need flexibility, personalized support, and alternative pathways to achieve their goals—reflecting a core strength in expanding opportunity and meeting students where they are.

During my visits to campus over the past several months, it became increasingly apparent that this university serves one of the most diverse student populations I have encountered in my career. Our students are not defined by a single experience or background. They include recent high school graduates, international students, working parents, veterans, first-generation students, adult learners returning to complete degrees, and other learners balancing education alongside careers and family responsibilities.

The trust placed in us demands that we remain adaptable, innovative, and deeply committed to the access that sparks opportunity.

Across New Mexico, an estimated 324,000 adults have started their college journey but haven’t yet crossed the finish line, representing one of our largest opportunities to expand access to education and training. By offering flexible programs, personalized advising, and credit for real-world experience, we are not simply awarding degrees and certificates, we are opening the doors to economic mobility and meaningful careers.

Our mission, however, goes beyond the classroom. We are entrusted with helping students transform their lives, strengthen their communities, and create pathways to generational change. That work depends on collaboration, transparency, and a shared commitment to institutional excellence as we meet the evolving needs of our students and region.

Here at Western New Mexico University, generations of students have enjoyed access to nationally ranked programs that consistently demonstrate excellence in both academic quality and student outcomes. Across disciplines, our students continue to excel on licensure examinations, graduate and professional assessments, and other measures of academic achievement, reflecting the strength of a WNMU education.

From the fine arts and humanities to the sciences, business, education, nursing, and social work, WNMU combines academic rigor, personalized support, and hands-on learning experiences that prepare students to lead meaningful lives and successful careers.

As we continue our commitment to excellence in academic programming, we must begin to thoughtfully expand and invest in our workforce and career pathways. From vocational training and allied health programs to developing certificate programs in growing fields such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and information technology, we have an opportunity to directly connect education to meaningful careers.

While our academic programs open the doors to new opportunities, it is equally important to recognize the commitment of our university staff who foster belonging, deliver essential services, and sustain the daily operations of the institution. From front office teams who build trusted relationships with students and families, to our campus police and grounds crews who maintain a safe and welcoming campus environment, to advisors, financial aid professionals, and student support staff who guide learners through every stage of their journey, our university staff are central to the student experience and to our success.

I firmly believe the strongest universities are built together. The expertise of our faculty, the dedication of our staff, the voices of our students, and the support of our alumni and communities will shape the future of WNMU. As we move forward, my administration will remain committed to listening, collaboration, and shared governance.

Western New Mexico University has a proud history rooted in service, accessibility, culture, and community. I am honored to begin this journey alongside you, and I look forward to building a future in which together, we will open doors to opportunity with purpose for generations of students to come.

Go Mustangs,

Jose E. Coll signature
